Benefits

Limbers you up after sleep.

Wakes up circulation and energy for the day.

Mental Clarity

The most difficult would be the Downward Dog, Upward Dog and Lunge poses - which I've found most beginners really struggle with, and are most likely to injure themselves with. Try substituting the Puppy for the Downward Dog and a light Cobra for the Upward Dog, and do a brief knee bend, if you can, for the Lunge. Then see how you feel the next day. As time goes on, these substitute poses will make it more and more possible to do the full versions presented on the video.

Safety

  • General Safety Consciousness - 2
  • Modifications Given - A Few
  • Multiple Demonstrators - No
  • Warnings Given - Not very many

The Yoga Journal Beginners series is infamous for not giving enough instruction on how to modify the beginners poses for the common person - and for not giving pose by pose warnings about how to avoid injury.

In this video, the poses with the most potental for damage are the ones mentioned above. To avoid back injury, remember to keep your knees bent in the Downward Dog and leg stretches, and watch for a feeling of pressure in the lower back during the Upward Dog, (or Cobra).

Remember - Rodney Yee does this for a living! Day and night! Don't expect to keep up with him!
